Sequential Figure and Ground

Artist Statement

Flow and rhythmic pattern were the main themes that influenced the composition choices. Rhythmic pattern was achieved through the winding s curve created through the placement of each form. This led to creating forms that blend into one another or have a relationship that groups them together, resulting in a smooth flow. Value transitions from heavy dark areas to light through contrast in size and color worked to create balance within the visual hierarchy of the composition. In general the figure-ground relationships were implemented with legibility in mind, particularly T1, 5G, R6 and P8. However, areas such as 4O and A7 aimed for reversibility and P3 for ambiguity with the intention of creating optical illusion.
